Ford is recalling approximately 272,817 vehicles due to issues with their 12-volt batteries, which could fail unexpectedly and pose safety risks. The recall affects specific 2021-2023 Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022-2023 Maverick pickup trucks. The issue, which was identified as a manufacturing defect from a supplier, could lead to battery degradation and sudden failure.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a statement explaining that when the 12-volt battery fails, it can cause the loss of electrical accessories, including hazard lights, which could significantly affect visibility and safety. In more severe cases, the failure may lead to a loss of drive power, making the vehicle difficult or impossible to drive, increasing the risk of a crash, particularly if the vehicle stalls in dangerous situations.
Ford has confirmed that the defect stems from the battery's supplier, and the company has taken steps to address the issue. The automaker plans to notify vehicle owners via letters, which are expected to be mailed out around February 3, 2025. These letters will instruct owners to bring their vehicles to an authorized Ford dealership for inspection.
If necessary, the dealership will replace the faulty 12-volt battery at no charge to the owner. Ford is advising affected customers to have their vehicles checked as soon as possible to avoid any risk of battery failure and the associated dangers.
While the recall affects a significant number of vehicles, Ford has reassured owners that the replacement of the faulty battery is a simple fix and that no additional costs will be incurred by vehicle owners. The company has also emphasized that this recall is proactive, ensuring that the potential safety concern is addressed promptly.
This recall serves as a reminder for vehicle owners to stay informed about manufacturer recalls and to respond quickly when notified to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road. Ford's swift response in issuing this recall and offering free battery replacements demonstrates the company's commitment to customer safety.
Affected vehicle owners are encouraged to contact their local Ford dealership for more details or to schedule an appointment for an inspection.
