- US-India defence relations, defence cooperation, Major Defence Partner
The defence relationship between the United States and India is rapidly growing, with key developments marking an exciting period of collaboration between the two nations. Ely Ratner, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, emphasized that the US-India defence ties are progressing in significant ways, particularly in defence industrial cooperation and operational collaboration across the military services. This partnership continues to expand even as the India-China relationship fluctuates.
In recognition of India’s increasing importance, the US has granted India the status of Major Defence Partner, a designation that deepens the countries' defence ties. Officials from the Biden administration have highlighted this relationship as a core element of US-India relations. One of the major milestones this year was India's agreement to purchase 31 General Atomics MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft, which will significantly enhance India’s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities across air, land, and sea domains. This procurement will contribute to bolstering India's defence capabilities in line with US strategic objectives in the region.
In addition to this, both nations have made significant strides in their defence cooperation, particularly through the signing of the Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA). This agreement ensures mutual support in the supply of defence goods and services, enhancing logistics and operational flexibility. During a meeting in September, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden reaffirmed their commitment to further advancing discussions on aligning their respective defence procurement systems, ensuring a smoother flow of defence equipment and services between the two countries.
