- Supreme Court, Karnataka High Court, Justice Vedavyasachar Srishan, courtroom decorum
The Supreme Court of India has taken a significant step by seeking a report from the Karnataka High Court concerning controversial comments made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda. During a recent hearing focused on a landlord-tenant dispute, Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as "Pakistan" and made a misogynistic remark about a woman lawyer. These statements have raised serious concerns about the conduct of judges and the implications of their words in a courtroom setting.
A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized the necessity for establishing clear guidelines for judges regarding their public comments. The bench pointed out that in an age where social media plays a crucial role in amplifying courtroom discussions, maintaining decorum is essential. Chief Justice Chandrachud stated, "Attention has been drawn to media reports regarding the comments made by Justice Srishananda. We request the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting the Chief Justice of the high court."
The Supreme Court's decision reflects a growing recognition of the need for accountability in the judiciary. As the situation unfolds, the report is expected to be submitted within two days, with the next hearing scheduled for Wednesday. This incident underlines the importance of responsible communication by judges and the potential repercussions of their remarks in the public domain.
