- Sukhbir Singh Badal, Golden Temple attack, Narain Singh arrested, Babbar Khalsa links
This morning, an attempted assassination of Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal took place at the Golden Temple, but quick action by security personnel prevented any harm. Badal, who was performing sewadar duties after being punished by Akal Takht for mistakes during the Akali Dal's tenure, was approached by a man identified as Narain Singh. Singh, who had concealed a firearm in his pocket, tried to shoot Badal but was stopped just in time.
Alert sewadar personnel noticed the shooter and swiftly grabbed his arm, preventing the bullet from hitting its target. The bullet missed Badal and the surrounding crowd, instead hitting a nearby wall. Within moments, the attacker was subdued by devotees and police officers present at the scene.
Videos of the incident, shared by news agency ANI, show Badal sitting on guard with a spear in hand, surrounded by his security team. In another video, captured by PTC News, Badal is seen reacting in shock when the shot is fired.
The police quickly responded to the scene, with officers Rishpal Singh, Jasbir, and Parminder Singh being credited for foiling the attack. Narain Singh, the attacker, was arrested and is believed to have connections with the Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa. He is also linked to the infamous 2004 Burail jailbreak, where several notorious criminals escaped from prison.
Following the attack, Badal's wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, arrived at the Golden Temple after hearing the news. Amritsar's police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar emphasized the difficulty of securing the Golden Temple due to religious sensitivities but praised the officers for their quick response and preparedness.
The attack is under investigation from all angles, and authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace in the aftermath of the incident.
