Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer from Rajasthan, has been appointed as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), succeeding Shaktikanta Das. The government announced that Malhotra will take charge from Wednesday for a term of three years. With a background in computer science from IIT Kanpur and a Master's in Public Policy from Princeton University, Malhotra has had a distinguished career spanning over three decades in various sectors, including finance, taxation, power, and information technology.

Before becoming the Revenue Secretary, Malhotra held the position of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, where he played a pivotal role in shaping tax policies. His vast experience in both state and central government affairs positions him as a strong leader for the RBI at a time when India faces critical economic challenges.

Malhotra takes over from Shaktikanta Das, who held the post since 2018 and successfully navigated the RBI through a period of uncertainty following the resignation of Urjit Patel. Malhotra's appointment is expected to continue the stability and growth of India's central banking system, with a focus on economic and financial stability.
