External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed concerns in the Lok Sabha regarding the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly following reports of attacks on Hindus. His statement came amidst rising incidents of communal violence in the neighboring country, where the treatment of minorities, especially Hindus, has become a matter of increasing alarm. Jaishankar emphasized that the government of Bangladesh must ensure the safety and security of its minority communities, highlighting that this issue is being closely monitored by India. The concern was also raised in light of two recent incidents: a Bangladeshi student swimming across a river into India illegally and a young Hindu girl fleeing violence for being an ISKCON devotee.

This statement follows a report from Bangladesh acknowledging 88 incidents of communal violence, primarily targeting Hindus, after the political upheaval in the country in August. The violence was triggered by the ousting of then-Premier Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh's interim government, under Muhammad Yunus, reported that 70 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had earlier conveyed India’s concerns to Bangladeshi officials, urging action to protect minority communities. Jaishankar’s remarks underscore India's diplomatic efforts to ensure the welfare of these vulnerable groups.

Jaishankar also discussed India’s broader foreign policy goals, emphasizing the importance of fostering good relations with neighboring countries. He pointed out that for India to have positive relations with Pakistan, the country needs to demonstrate a commitment to eradicating terrorism. Additionally, when asked about India’s "Neighbourhood First Policy," he highlighted the development projects, trade, and exchanges India has with its neighbors—excluding Pakistan and China—as evidence of the success of India’s approach in building regional cooperation.
