- Om Prakash Chautala, Haryana CM, INLD leader, INLD leadership
Om Prakash Chautala, a five-time Chief Minister of Haryana and a prominent figure in Indian politics, has passed away at 89 following a cardiac arrest at his residence in Gurgaon. Born on January 1, 1935, in Sirsa, Haryana, Chautala’s political career spanned several decades. He first became Chief Minister in 1989, but his tenure was marked by short stints due to political instability. His third term in 1991 was also brief, as President's rule was imposed within two weeks. However, Chautala later served two full terms from 1999 to 2005.
Chautala's political career faced significant challenges in 2013 when he and his son, Ajay Singh Chautala, were convicted in the 2000 teacher recruitment scam. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally recruiting over 3,200 teachers. After serving part of his sentence, Chautala was released in 2021 under a special remission order. In 2022, he was sentenced to another four-year term in a disproportionate assets case.
Om Prakash Chautala, the son of former Haryana Chief Minister Devi Lal, leaves behind a political legacy continued by his sons and grandsons. His son Abhay Singh Chautala now leads the INLD, while Ajay Singh Chautala founded the Janata Jannayak Party in 2019. His grandsons, including Dushyant Singh Chautala, who became the youngest-ever Lok Sabha MP in 2014, have also made their mark in politics.
