Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to India represents a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two nations, particularly following recent diplomatic tensions caused by derogatory remarks made by Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit, President Muizzu proposed a Rs 3,000 crore currency swap deal aimed at bolstering the Maldives' foreign exchange reserves amid ongoing economic challenges.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed the media on the discussions held between the leaders, addressing the question of the improving relationship between India and the Maldives. Responding to a journalist’s query in Hindi about the turnaround in ties, Misri humorously remarked, “Dooriyan, nazdeekiyan, ittefaq...I don't think you could add more names of Hindi films in one question but I would say, 'Yaarana chalta rahega.'” He elaborated on the longstanding relationship between the two countries, emphasizing their shared interests in trade, economic development, and security.

Upon his arrival in Delhi, President Muizzu was warmly welcomed by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi at Raj Bhavan. After paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, he held crucial talks with Modi, where the Prime Minister reiterated India's commitment as a close friend of the Maldives. Modi highlighted India's proactive role in providing essential aid, including COVID-19 vaccines and infrastructure development, underscoring the mutual benefits of the partnership.

Among the significant projects discussed, Modi mentioned the virtual inauguration of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport on the Haa Dhaalu Atoll and the delivery of 700 social housing units. Additionally, India has initiated a drinking water and sewerage project designed to benefit nearly 30,000 people across 28 islands in the Maldives.

The geopolitical landscape has shifted since Muizzu's election, as he has been perceived as a pro-China leader advocating for an 'India out' policy, which included a request for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. In response, India replaced military staff with technical personnel to maintain humanitarian aviation platforms provided to the Maldives.

Concerns regarding regional security have been heightened by the docking of a Chinese spy ship in the Maldives, reminiscent of similar incidents in Sri Lanka.
