A case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in Bengaluru, India, with an eight-month-old child testing positive for the virus, according to reports . The child is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru and has no travel history. The Karnataka Health Department has confirmed the case.
HMPV is similar to COVID-19 and can cause respiratory disease in people of all ages, especially among young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear three to 10 days after infection and include flu-like signs such as cough, blocked nose, runny nose, sore throat, and breathing difficulties.
In response to the outbreak, several states in India, including Delhi, have issued advisories to mitigate the spread of the virus. Delhi health authorities have made strict isolation protocols and universal precautions mandatory for suspected cases. Hospitals have been directed to ensure the availability of medications and oxygen for treating mild and severe cases.
Precautions and Guidelines:
- Wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover nose and mouth with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing.
- Wear masks if experiencing respiratory symptoms or if you are elderly or pregnant.
- Avoid sending children to school during illness.
- Maintain proper documentation of SARI cases and lab-confirmed influenza cases.
The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and has requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to share timely updates regarding the situation in China.
