In a tragic incident near Chicago, USA, a 22-year-old Indian-origin student, Sai Teja Nukarapu, was shot dead by unknown assailants at a gas station. Sai Teja, a resident of Telangana's Khammam district, was working part-time at the gas station to support himself while pursuing an MBA in the United States.
According to family members, the incident occurred while Sai Teja was at the gas station's cash counter, as reported by PTI. An India Today report mentioned that Sai Teja had been working at a cash counter in a shopping mall and had been helping a friend at the gas station when the tragic event took place.
BRS leader Madhusudan Thatha visited Sai Teja's parents in Khammam and expressed his condolences. The grieving parents revealed that their son was not on duty at the time but had stayed on at the gas station at a friend's request.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago strongly condemned the incident and called for immediate action against the culprits. "We are shocked and deeply saddened by the murder of Indian student Nukarapu Sai Teja. We demand immediate action against the culprits. The Consulate will extend all possible help to the family and friends of the victim," the Consulate said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Members of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) have also been contacted to assist in the case and provide support to the family.
Sai Teja had completed his graduation in India before moving to the US for his higher studies. This incident has left the Indian community in shock, raising concerns about the safety of international students working part-time to sustain their education and living expenses in foreign countries.
