For the first time since 1995, Vijayawada city in Andhra Pradesh has experienced severe flooding due to torrential rains and the overflow of lakes and canals. Although the Krishna river flows through the city, it was the Budameru canal that caused significant issues, resulting in the inundation of low-lying areas. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been actively managing the disaster, leveraging his administration's resources and expertise to address the crisis.

In contrast, YSR Congress President Jagan Mohan Reddy has used the opportunity to criticize the ruling government, attempting to gain political mileage from the disaster. His recent comments, made during a media interaction, have sparked considerable backlash. Reddy claimed that the flood was a man-made disaster caused by the opening of gates on the Budameru canal without prior warning to residents. This statement has been widely criticized for its inaccuracy, as the Budameru canal, a rivulet affected by encroachments and inadequate diversion systems, does not have any gates.

Reddy’s remarks have not only surprised the public but also those who were with him during his visit to the flood-affected areas. His lack of basic knowledge about the canal and the flood situation has led to widespread criticism and has made him an easy target for social media trolls. The incident underscores the need for accurate information and responsible communication, especially during times of crisis.
