Savitri Jindal, the independent candidate and India’s richest woman, has achieved a remarkable victory in the Hisar Assembly constituency, defeating BJP's Kamal Gupta and Congress candidate Ram Niwas Rara by a margin of 18,941 votes. Expressing her gratitude, Jindal took to X, stating, “Abhaar Hisar Parivar” (Gratitude to the family of Hisar).
At 74, Jindal's latest win marks her third successful campaign in Hisar, having previously won the seat in 2005 and 2009 as a member of the Congress party. She stepped into the political arena following the death of her husband, OP Jindal, in 2005, and has since become a prominent figure in both business and politics. As the chairperson of the Jindal Group, she oversees a conglomerate that operates in steel, power, mining, and infrastructure, leading to her international recognition, including receiving the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.
Jindal first represented Hisar in the Haryana Assembly in 2005 as a Congress MLA and was re-elected in 2009. She served as a minister in the Haryana government in 2013 but later parted ways with the Congress in March 2024.
According to Forbes, her personal wealth is estimated at ₹ 3.65 lakh crore, making her the richest woman in India. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index places her as the fifth-richest individual in the country, with a reported net worth of $36.3 billion. This immense fortune is primarily derived from her family's stakes in JSW Steel and ventures in power generation and infrastructure.
In her election affidavit, Jindal declared assets worth ₹ 270 crore, which includes ₹ 80 crore in immovable property. Her main political rival, BJP's Kamal Gupta, has been serving as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing in Haryana since December 2021 and was previously elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly in 2014 and 2019.
Jindal's latest victory solidifies her significant influence in Haryana politics and sets the stage for her continued leadership in the region.
