In a significant update for the food and hospitality sector, the office of the Commissioner of Police in Visakhapatnam City has issued new instructions allowing restaurants and eateries to stay open until midnight. This decision follows guidelines set by the Government of Andhra Pradesh under Sections 7(2) and 15(2) of the Andhra Pradesh Shops and Establishments Act 1988, which specifically excludes bars and restaurants.
Previously, hotels and eateries were restricted to operating until 10:30 PM, a measure implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic aimed at controlling crime rates. The extension of operating hours has been met with enthusiasm from both businesses and the general public, who view it as a positive development for the local economy and dining experience.
However, the Greater Visakha Citizens’ Forum has voiced concerns regarding the potential impact on the working conditions of restaurant staff. They emphasize the importance of ensuring fair labor practices and adequate working hours for employees in the hospitality industry.
As this new directive comes into effect, it remains to be seen how both the business community and the local populace will adapt to these extended hours, and how the concerns raised by community organizations will be addressed.
