Four days after a resounding victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has yet to announce its choice for Chief Minister. Senior BJP leader and former CM, Devendra Fadnavis, remains the preferred candidate for the top post within the BJP, but its ally, Shiv Sena, is pushing for Eknath Shinde, who led the rebellion that toppled the previous Uddhav Thackeray government in 2022. The delay in announcing the Chief Minister has drawn criticism from the opposition, with some suggesting that the BJP is stalling to avoid embarrassment.
BJP sources stress they are in no rush, citing the delayed government formation in Uttar Pradesh as a precedent. The decision will also involve discussions over ministerial positions, with the BJP expected to claim a significant portion of the 43 available ministerial berths. While Shinde's leadership in the election campaign is recognized by Shiv Sena, BJP leaders argue that Fadnavis, backed by the party’s base and the RSS, should take the top post.
Amidst these internal differences, the opposition, particularly Shiv Sena (UBT), has ramped up criticism, accusing Shinde of being sidelined and questioning the legitimacy of the mandate. However, with the NCP reportedly backing Fadnavis, Shinde’s ability to negotiate for the Chief Minister role appears limited. Despite this, Shiv Sena leaders insist that the Mahayuti remains united, and a decision will be made soon regarding the CM post. The drama surrounding the announcement continues to unfold as the alliance strives to present a united front.
