- Biden administration, MH-60R helicopters, defense sale, India-US defense relations
On Monday, the Biden administration informed Congress about its decision to approve the sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters and related equipment to India, valued at approximately $1.17 billion. This move is aimed at boosting India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, enabling the country to better deter current and future security threats. The sale includes advanced systems such as Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS), infrared systems, external fuel tanks, and other crucial military equipment.
The approval of this sale comes just weeks before President Biden completes his term, marking a significant step in strengthening the defense relationship between the United States and India. The principal contractor for the deal will be Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems. The implementation of the sale will also involve temporary travel of US government and contractor representatives to India for technical support and oversight.
