- Maharashtra CM race, Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, BJP Shiv Sena, Maharashtra politics
In Mumbai, tensions remain high as the BJP and Shiv Sena navigate the selection of the next Maharashtra Chief Minister. Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis met with outgoing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde amidst ongoing discussions about leadership following the recent state elections. Fadnavis, widely regarded as a top contender for the position, is expected to be appointed as Chief Minister after BJP MLAs meet to choose their legislature party leader.
However, the issue lies in convincing Shinde to step down, despite his leadership in the re-elected government. Shinde had previously backed down from opposition, stating he wouldn’t be an obstacle to a BJP Chief Minister. But Shinde’s absence from Mumbai and his recent hospitalization have raised questions about his stance on a potential demotion. Sources suggest the existing "1+2" formula could continue, with Fadnavis as CM and Shinde and NCP’s Ajit Pawar as deputies, but it remains unclear whether Shinde will accept this arrangement.
The BJP, having won 132 out of 288 seats in the November election, doesn’t need Shinde’s Sena and Pawar’s NCP to reach the majority but still faces the challenge of managing the complex coalition and ensuring a smooth transition of power. Shinde’s party has made it clear they are dissatisfied with being sidelined, complicating the BJP’s plans to reclaim the Chief Minister’s position without straining its alliance.
