In a bold move towards establishing India as a global sports powerhouse, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally expressed its intent to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics. A Letter of Intent was sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Future Host Commission on October 1, reinforcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of bringing the Games to Indian soil. PM Modi has publicly shared his enthusiasm for the 2036 Games, emphasizing their potential to foster economic growth, promote youth empowerment, and enhance social progress throughout the country.

PM Modi had previously discussed this vision at the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, pledging India's commitment to staging the Olympics and stating that 140 crore Indians would support this dream. The Prime Minister has even sought input from past Olympic athletes, emphasizing the importance of detailed preparations and lessons learned from previous Games.

India is among ten nations showing interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, including countries like Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, and Egypt. The IOC’s Future Host Commission, responsible for evaluating and selecting host nations, will carefully review each bid. IOC President Thomas Bach has voiced support for India, noting a "strong case" for the country’s Olympic aspirations. This bid reflects a significant step towards India’s goal of becoming a global sports hub and marks a new era in Indian sports ambitions.
