- UK travel advisory India, satellite phone ban India, travel warnings India
The UK government has updated its travel advisory for India, particularly focusing on the possession and use of satellite phones. According to the revised advisory from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), British nationals are cautioned that carrying or operating satellite phones in India without a valid license is illegal. The advisory notes that several Britons have been arrested for attempting to bring satellite phones and other satellite-enabled navigational devices into India without prior permission.
Additionally, the FCDO highlighted that permission from India's Department of Telecommunication is required for various types of equipment, including listening or recording devices, radio transmitters, and powerful cameras or binoculars. Travelers are advised to contact the High Commission of India in London for guidance on such equipment.
Although the travel advisory is not a regulation, it serves as a precautionary measure for British nationals, helping them make informed travel decisions. Ignoring this advice may lead to complications, such as invalidating travel insurance.
The advisory also reiterates travel warnings for areas near the India-Pakistan border (within 10 km) and regions such as Kashmir and Manipur, advising against non-essential travel.
