We can hardly contain our excitement for the latest Shrek news! After 14 long years since Shrek Forever After concluded DreamWorks’ beloved fairytale saga, the animation studio is finally bringing us a much-anticipated fifth installment. Following the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Shrek 5 has now been given a release date. According to The Hollywood Reporter (and confirmed by DreamWorks on X, formerly known as Twitter), Shrek 5 will hit theaters on July 1, 2026, perfectly timed with the anniversary of the first film.
Even better, the original cast is returning! Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise their iconic roles. While plot details are still under wraps (possibly hidden in the highest room of the tallest tower), the ending of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hinted at more adventures in Far, Far Away, so we might see Antonio Banderas join the cast list soon.
The film will be directed by Walt Dohrn and Brad Ableson. Dohrn, who worked as a writer on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third and served as Head of Story for Shrek Forever After, brings a wealth of Shrek experience. Ableson, known for co-directing Minions: The Rise of Gru, adds his expertise to the mix.
Producers for Shrek 5 include Gina Shay from Shrek Forever After and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri. While the release date of July 1, 2026, might seem Far, Far Away, after almost a decade and a half without Shrek, the anticipation is building. Only time will tell if Shrek 5 will live up to the hype, but one thing is certain: the excitement is real.
