Aamir Khan revealed on Rhea Chakraborty’s talk show Chapter 2 that he considered stepping away from films due to guilt over his absence during his children's formative years. Aamir shared that he felt deep regret over not being there for his kids, Ira, Junaid, and Azad, as they grew up. Reflecting on their struggles, he said, "Ira was battling depression at the time, though she’s doing much better now. But back then, she needed me. Junaid is just beginning his career. He has lived most of his life without me around. Now, he’s about to take a significant step in his career, and if I’m not with him during this crucial time, then what’s the point? Azad is 9 years old now. In just three years, he’ll be a teenager, and his childhood will be gone."

During the conversation, Aamir also shared how the pandemic made him realize how much he had missed out on the important moments in his children's lives. He admitted, "I had strong feelings for my family, but my focus was always on connecting with my audience. I was unaware of my kids’ feelings or needs when they were growing up. I knew everything about my team and directors but was clueless about my own children’s challenges," Aamir said emotionally. He further explained the reason behind his decision to distance himself from films, saying, "I chose to step away from films because I was angry at myself and my work for taking me away from my family. I didn’t want to be involved with it anymore."

Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta in 1986, early in his career, but they divorced in 2002. They have a daughter, Ira, and a son, Junaid. Aamir later married Kiran Rao in 2005, and they announced their separation in 2022. Despite their divorce, they continue to co-parent their son Azad. Aamir Khan made a return to the big screen with Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, though the film was a major disappointment at the box office. His next project is Sitaare Zameen Par.
