Bharateeyudu 2, which was widely criticized for tarnishing the legacy of the original film and faced heavy trolling following its OTT release, has encountered additional complications. The film, directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan, was not only panned critically but also attracted controversy for its premature OTT release. The Multiplex Association of India has now issued a legal notice to Lyca Production, demanding an explanation for the film's early availability on streaming platforms.
According to existing agreements between multiplexes and producers, Bollywood movies are required to adhere to an 8-week window before making their OTT debut after a theatrical release. This rule ensures that movies have sufficient time to run in theaters before transitioning to digital platforms. Bharateeyudu 2's early OTT release has raised objections from the Multiplex Association, which is concerned about the violation of these terms.
While this regulation is enforced in Mumbai, it does not apply in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. As a result, the producers of Bharateeyudu 2, who are already disheartened by the film's poor box office performance, must now navigate this legal challenge. The outcome will reveal how the producers plan to address the notice and manage the fallout from both the film's commercial failure and the regulatory breach.
