Madhubala, the iconic Bollywood actress known for her stunning beauty and unforgettable performances, faced a life filled with both glamour and great personal pain. While she captivated audiences with her screen presence, off-camera, she suffered from a congenital heart disease, specifically a ventricular septal defect. This condition took a heavy toll on her health, both physically and emotionally.
As her illness progressed, Madhubala’s health deteriorated rapidly. According to her sister, Madhur Bhushan, in an interview with Filmfare, Madhubala became so frail that she appeared like a "skeleton." Despite being urged to meet people, Madhubala preferred isolation and was deeply self-conscious about her appearance. Madhur recalls Madhubala saying, "Dekho main kya se kya hogayee!" as she struggled with the changes to her appearance due to her illness. She also expressed feelings of despair, stating, "Don’t waste money on me. I won’t survive."
Despite her health challenges, Madhubala remained independent, handling her daily activities, including bathing and eating, on her own. Oxygen cylinders were kept nearby as she battled breathlessness. Her condition worsened after a health scare on the sets of Bahut Din Huye (1954), when she spit blood while brushing her teeth, leading to a diagnosis of heart disease. Despite her declining health, she continued to work, including performing in demanding scenes for the epic Mughal-E-Azam (1960).
In 2017, a statue of Madhubala was unveiled at the Madame Tussauds Museum in New Delhi, an honor attended by her sister Madhur Bhushan. When asked who she thought should play her sister in a biopic, Madhur quickly named actress Kareena Kapoor Khan.
Madhubala's story is one of incredible resilience, as she continued to work through intense pain, leaving a legacy that endures to this day.
