Veteran filmmaker Krishnavamsi has made a comeback of sorts with Rangamarthanda which released in theaters today. Here’s our review of the film.

Story: Raghava Rao(Prakash Raj) is a seasoned drama artist who did countless shows and is a remarkable artist on stage. After receiving the Rangamarthanda title for his incredible contribution to the field, he announces retirement and wishes to spend the rest of his life with wife Ramyakrishnan. Will he be able to lead his life peacefully after that?

How did the actors perform?

The film is backed by some incredibly talented actors including Prakash Raj, Bramhanandam, and Ramyakrishnan. They deliver standout performances in their challenging roles. It is a treat to watch them all perform together on the big screens.

The rest of the star cast comprises of Adarsh, Anasuya, and others. They to do full justice to their roles and are at ease.

What about the technical finesse?

Krishna Vamsi is a fine storyteller and he has picked a novel subject for Rangamarthanda. He has the very best actors in the lead roles and succeeds in extracting exquisite performances from them.

The background score and the visuals are much in tune with the narrative. The film is packed with technical finesse, as do most of Krishnavamsi’s films. Production designing could’ve been better though as there are couple of tacky sequences, given the weak set designs.

Analysis:

Rangamarthanda is a Telugu remake of Bengali classic blockbuster Natasamrat. The film is adapted for the tastes of the Telugu audience and the director Krishnavamsi partly succeeds in the same.  The core plot is retained.

But for scripts like these to strike a chord with the Telugu audience, cosmetic changes had to be made. However, regardless of all these efforts, the film only caters to a small section of the audience.

The poetic narration and the emotionally complex core plot can connect only with the A section audience predominantly. The lack of nativity factor will play a role in the theatrical prospects of this film.

The proceedings start off on a slow note with the establishment of the core characters taking forever. A better set of opening exchanges are needed to start on a better note.

The latter half is dragged on with the sequence pertaining to the emotional turbulences in the lives of the lead pair taking forever to get resolved. The climax should’ve been better.

Verdict: Rahmngamarthanda is a mixed bag of emotions. Certain emotional scenes connect instantly, while others are dragged on and on and on. It is only for a certain section of the Telugu audience that this film caters to.
