Ponniyin Selvan 2 is the sequel to Ponniyin Selvan which had a good run in the Tamil markets and a decent run in other languages. The second part released in theaters today and here's what we have to say about the same now.

Story: The film starts where the first part ended and it essentially revolves around the murder plan to see the end of the Chola king. This also puts the two princesses of the Chola dynasty in danger. What is the fate of the Chola kingdom now?

How did the actors perform?

The film has an ensemble cast of Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shobita Dulipala and others in the lead roles. Given that this is a periodic film, there's ample scope for all the actors to perform and all of them make the most of the opportunity as they emote to a desired extent and breathe life into the proceedings.

What about the technical finesse?

The director Mani Ratnam succeeds in presenting this larger-than-life story in a novel manner. But he is a bit too honest with the narration and leaves the commercial aspect for a toss, which doesn't quite bode well. AR Rahman's BGM and soundtrack are of good quality.

Analysis:

Comparatively, we must say the emotional connect and the subsequent watchable factor is better in the second part. The drama is more engaging and outward in this installment. Maybe this is the impression created because we have seen the first part and the characters associated with it already.

The opening exchanges involving Karthi and Trisha are presented in an aesthetic manner and they have great technical value as well.

The interval portion is lavishly shot and we get an impression that almost every frame looks like a painting.

But much like the first part, this second part also lacks the much needed commercial aspect which is very much important for a big event film. There are no commercial high points or elevation blocks in the film that can captivate the front-row audience.

The end portion rounds off the whole story and we get a conclusion of the Chola dynasty and the stories surrounding the royal family.

Verdict: Ponniyin Selvan 2 is a film that is entirely made for the Tamil folk. Other language audience might not get captivated to it due to the lack of commercial highs as was seen in Baahubali 2 and KGF 2.
