Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salman's latest theatrical outing, King Of Kotha released in theaters today and the film is billed to be a gangster drama. Here's our review of the same.

Story: Ravi's son Tony is torn between his inherited legacy and his desire for a different life. Unlike his father, Tony isn't drawn to the dark world of crime. Instead, he falls in love with a woman from a wealthy background. What follows later is a tale of power struggle and a series of violent tales in the city of Kotha.

How did the actors perform?

Dulquer has delivered a knockout performance in the film. This is the first time he played a full-on rugged role on screen and he has indeed delivered the goods. Aishwarya Lekshmi gets a brief yet impactful role. The rest of the cast delivers fitting performances.

What about the technical finesse?

The director Abhilash makes his debut with the film and he picks a mass yet routine story and premise. The story, in itself is a dated one as it has cliched gangster drama vibes. But what does succeed in, is losing it with enough commercial high moments to keep the viewers hooked.

The music by Jakes Bejoy is of top tier quality. He uplifts the whole vibe of the film entirely with his musical score. The visuals and cinematography are also of elite quality.

Analysis:

King of Kotha is similar to most commercial gangster dramas that have made their way to the theaters. But it survives due to the commercial highs that are included in the narrative.

It is the story of a father and son who set out to rule the place of Kotha. Their never-ending pursuit of power unfolds a series of violent incidents in the area which essentially forms the crux of the story.

The movie feels dragged at times, due to the slow narration. A few scenes seem dragged out and that hampers the flow.

The climax portion gets a dull treatment as the film ends on a very predictable and typical note. A better written ending could have possessed the X factor and helped the film better.

Verdict:

KOK is a moderately engaging gangster drama and it has just about enough things going its way to make for a satisfactory watch. The film will be liked by those who love gangster dramas, and for the rest, it is a okayish watch.
