The highly anticipated Devara: Part 1, featuring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor, has finally hit theaters. Directed by Koratala Siva, this big-budget entertainer has generated a significant buzz. Let’s dive into the review and see if it lives up to the expectations.
Story:
Set in the coastal village of Ratnagiri, near the Red Sea, Devara: Part 1 follows the story of Devara (Jr NTR), Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan), and Rayappa (Srikanth), who work alongside Muruga (Murali Sharma) in smuggling goods from ships. Devara, troubled by his conscience, decides to quit this illegal trade, but Bhaira refuses and even plots to kill him. Suddenly, Devara vanishes, and twelve years pass.
In Devara’s absence, Bhaira dominates Ratnagiri but remains fixated on finding and killing his old friend. Vara, Devara’s son, grows up innocent and powerless, eventually aligning himself with Bhaira. The key questions driving the plot include why Vara would side with Bhaira, whether Vara harbors resentment toward his father, and whether Devara is still alive. Bhaira's motivations for killing Devara also unfold throughout the film.
Plus Points:
Jr NTR once again proves his acting prowess, playing two distinct characters: Devara and Vara. His portrayal of Devara captures both humility and fierceness, while Vara exudes innocence and fear. NTR’s seamless switch between these roles keeps the audience engaged.
Saif Ali Khan makes an impressive debut in Tollywood as Bhaira, a revenge-driven antagonist. His performance as the vengeful friend adds depth to the film. Janhvi Kapoor delivers a decent performance, with her scenes alongside the young NTR adding a touch of charm to the story.
The action sequences are well-executed, and designed to thrill the audience. Several dialogues, especially those spoken by Devara, help elevate his character, giving the film an entertaining and heroic feel. Supporting roles played by Srikanth, Prakash Raj, and others also add value to the narrative.
Minus Points:
While the movie offers an entertaining ride, the plot is relatively predictable. Director Koratala Siva could have crafted a more engaging second half. Some scenes could have been executed better, which might have added more emotional depth to the storyline.
Janhvi Kapoor’s role is limited to only a handful of scenes, which may leave her fans wanting more. Similarly, Prakash Raj’s backstory lacks depth and could have been more fleshed out. Saif Ali Khan’s character, though strong in the first half, feels underdeveloped in the second, and the climax arrives rather abruptly, which may leave some viewers feeling unsatisfied.
Technical Aspects:
Koratala Siva delivers in his dual role as writer and director, but the script could have benefited from more polish, particularly in the latter half. The emotional aspects of the narrative, though touched upon, lack the depth that could have made the film more compelling.
Rathnavelu’s cinematography and Anirudh Ravichander’s music are major highlights, giving the movie an aesthetic and emotional boost. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is solid overall but could have been tighter in the second half. The action choreography is impressive, and the production values are top-notch.
Verdict:
Devara: Part 1 is an action-packed drama with plenty of entertainment value. Jr NTR’s stellar performance as both Devara and Vara is a definite highlight, supported by a commendable effort from Saif Ali Khan and a charming presence from Janhvi Kapoor. While the predictable storyline and slower pacing in the second half may detract from the overall experience, the film still offers enough thrills to make it a worthwhile watch. If you’re a fan of Jr NTR or action dramas, this movie will make for an enjoyable weekend outing.
