I'm offering a Guitar Performance Workshop in Santa Cruz, modeled on a class I've been teaching in Cupertino for over 20 years, first at De Anza College, and for the past ten or more years, at a private venue. We meet at the Santa Cruz Music Academy, where I was a founding Director, on Monday evenings. The workshop is run on the "master class" model, meaning that students play for others in the class, and receive instruction/critique.
Here are a few highlights:
*10 weekly sessions, beginning early January 2025, 7:00 PM. End of term performance event date TBD (late adds accepted). We’re in the middle of the current term, but you’re welcome to drop in to check out the class!
*Safe! The class supports and nurtures players at all points on the nervousness continuum.
*Affordable! I frame tuition around a reasonable hourly rate, divided by the number of students in the class, plus room rental (also quite reasonable). Generally, tuition is around $250, and will be finalized near the start of the term. If we rent a venue for performance, we'll divide that cost as well, which might be shared with another group or two.
*Everyone plays every week (who wants to), which builds confidence to perform in front of others.
*We focus on technique - the class begins with a technical warmup, and many of the lessons address technical insufficiencies. Interpretation, musicianship, and stage poise are nurtured as well.
*The class is primarily for classical guitarists who read music - early intermediate through highly advanced students are welcome.
*Class size limited to 8 students.
About Ron Dunn
I was the Director of Guitar Activities and World Music at De Anza College from 2001 to 2022, when I retired. I've been fortunate to have studied with some of the greatest teachers and performers in the country, and have developed a methodology that is gentle and kind-hearted, but honest - I understand that everyone comes to music with different backgrounds and goals, and I hope to help you attain those goals, and quell the fears around performance that hinder so many. You can read more about me, my approach, and experience at https://www.rondunnguitar.com. I also teach one-on-one.
You can reach me from the Website, or respond via email. I hope to hear from you soon!
