My motorhome was purchased around late 2003 from a gentleman in Alabama. He only used it for tailgating for Alabama for one season. He really never used the home for traveling.
Numerous upgrades have been performed by me. I am not a professional, but you would never know it by the quality of my work. I will outline all the upgrades to the motorhome below:
Exterior:
In 2015, the body was painted with Sherwin Williams (SW) professional grade two stage white paint. The bin handles, mirrors, and windshield wipers were painted with SW two stage black.
New headlights and fog lights were purchased and installed last year.
New LED bulbs were placed in all clearance lights.
The rear step ladder was removed to make the end cap to have the “Prevost” bus look.
LED license plate lights were added to the rear plate.
The side awning was removed to allow the Braun handicapped lift to be installed.
All windows (less windshield) were removed and resealed using 3M rubber gaskets in lieu of caulk. The front driver and passenger windows were tinted 35% to reduce heat and “the cool factor”.
Braun Lift
A factory new DOT approved commercial Braun Century 2 wheelchair lift was installed in 2014 along with an accessible door. The door is manually operated. The door framework is aluminum tubing and welded into the existing frame.
Interior:
The couch was removed and a medical bed was bolted into the floor in its place. The alternating air pressure mattress will remain if the new owner is interested.
The cabinets above the lift were narrowed to allow for a personal assistant or family member to have additional headroom.
All light bulbs were replaced with LED bulbs. The two hanging light fixtures above the medical bed and dining table were removed and replaced with new low profile light fixtures.
The TV cabinet was shortened to allow for my son to have clear access out the front window as we traveled. It is a smaller TV, but served our purpose for easy viewing through the front window.
Pergo flooring was placed in the front portion of the motorhome to allow for easy maneuvering of his wheelchair.
Wheelchair tie downs were installed to secure his wheelchair.
The shower enclosure was removed and an aluminum frame was welded together and then bolted into place. A shower curtain was then installed on the aluminum top rail. We were able to transfer our son from his wheelchair to his shower chair.
A new black residential refrigerator was installed in 2024. I upgraded the “old” Norcold with a new Amish cooling system in 2021, but never really kept the refrigerator cold. The residential refrigerator only runs off electricity. We always ran the generator to have power for our son’s wheelchair, medical equipment, and alternating mattress while traveling, so a residential refrigerator was not a problem.
Generator
A new Onan 5500 generator was installed approximately 8 years ago. I have maintained the generator as scheduled to make sure it was always ready to meet my son’s needs.
Tires
The steer and drive tires were replaced in June 2024. The drive tires were aging out (6 years) and the steer tires were three years old. I decided to replace all tires in June for peace of mind for our summer vacation to the northern states. Dyna beads were added, per specs, to all tires at the time of installation.
Shocks
Rear Bilstein shocks were added in 2021. New front Bilstein shocks were added in June of 2024.
Sumo Springs
Front and rear Sumo springs were added in 2021. They made a great deal of difference in the motorhome swaying left to right when traveling.
Safe Drive
A safe drive was installed on the front end in case of a front tire blow out.
Mechanical - 2020/2021
Exhaust System
A Banks cold air intake along with Banks headers were added to the true dual exhaust system for improved gas mileage and performance.
Fuel System
A new in-tank fuel pump was installed in addition to all fuel lines with new connectors. The aluminum hard lines were not replaced. The fuel fill hoses were also replaced. The EVAP canister was updated with all new charcoal and filters.
Engine System
The Workhorse 8.1L Vortec V8 engine was removed and rebuilt at a Rick’s machine shop in Kerens, Texas. At this time a new serpentine belt, water pump, radiator, radiator hoses, spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel injectors, all engine sensors, motor mounts, oil pump, engine gaskets - any item that could be replaced was. The intake manifold was refurbished at Rick’s machine shop.
Hot Water Heater
All mechanical parts of the Atwood water heater were replaced in 2024. It now works great!
Travel Time After Engine Rebuild
We have taken our recreational vehicle (RV) on numerous trips since the engine was rebuilt. Many trips to the Dallas area for overnight stays for plane watching at DFW and air shows in the metroplex area. We have taken it to Nascar races in Fort Worth. We have also taken the motorhome to Gulfport, Mississippi for the Cruisin The Coast car show. We traveled to Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois on one long trip (3000 miles) this last summer. It was the last trip we were able to take with our son. I am not sure of the exact miles since the rebuild, but would estimate around 6000 miles.
Areas of Need
The screen windows are due to be replaced in the near future. One has come loose from the frame, but is still functional. It is not really any problem, just want to let the new owner be aware of any item that might/will need to be addressed.
The entrance door plastic slider has been removed. It was cracked. I was going to repair, just never got around to doing it. The slider is somewhere in my shop. The new owner is welcome to it if I can locate it. We just placed a small pillow in the opening when the exterior door was open to prevent bugs from coming in.
The living room slide is slow to retract. It functions perfectly when being extended, it is slow to retract. I extend the levelers on the drivers side to allow gravity to assist in bringing the slide in. There are times I would gently push from the outside as my wife worked the controller to retract the slide. I have not troubleshooted the issue at all. It could be the solenoid, controller or slide motor. It has not been an issue in our travels, but I want to make sure the new owner is aware of any issue that I am aware of.
The chassis front dash air conditioner blows air but it does not get cold. I added freon several years ago and it blew cold air for the season. We run the generator full time when we are on the road as stated previously, so we just always run the house air conditioners.
The Sale
It is with a very heavy heart that we are proceeding with selling our treasured motorhome. So many memories…our son passed away in December 2024. Our hope is that someone with a child in need would be able to purchase the home and make many wonderful memories as our family has. That being said, I know there are other families that have special needs that would benefit from having an accessible motorhome.
As with any piece of mechanical equipment, issues can arise. This is true with a motorhome. I can sell my motorhome with complete confidence all is well, but there are no guarantees written or implied with the motorhome.
I will be happy to answer any questions before the sale and willing to assist if any issue comes about after the sale. I am very familiar with the different systems and have a vast working knowledge of them for the last approximate 20 years of owning the motorhome. We have never lived in the RV, and it has always been stored under cover.
Delivery
My wife and I are both retired now. We can assist with delivery (driving) to your location once the home is paid for in full. We would only ask that you cover fuel costs to and from your location in addition to a daily meal allowance ($25 daily) along with any possible motel stays ($150 night) necessary for our return trip home.
