On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump appointed former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as his incoming Director of National Intelligence and Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Gabbard, known for her non-interventionist stance, previously demanded the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and Syria during her 2020 presidential campaign. Rubio, a son of Cuban immigrants and a staunch critic of Latin American communism, would become the first Hispanic to hold the role of the top U.S. diplomat.

Trump praised Gabbard, a veteran and former Democratic presidential candidate, highlighting her "fearless spirit" and commitment to national security, calling her an "illustrious leader for our intelligence community." Gabbard, who endorsed Trump earlier this year, expressed gratitude for the appointment, pledging to protect the safety and freedom of Americans.

Gabbard has a history of controversial views, including her opposition to U.S. involvement in Ukraine and her 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. She also faced backlash in 2022 for statements about U.S.-sponsored biolabs in Ukraine, a claim that echoed Russian propaganda.

In naming Rubio as Secretary of State, Trump commended him as a “Highly Respected Leader” and “fearless warrior.” Rubio, known for his strong stance against communism and opposition to countries like China and Iran, said he would work closely with Trump to deliver "peace through strength."

Rubio’s appointment initially faced criticism from non-interventionist Republicans, who urged Trump to reconsider. However, Trump emphasized Rubio’s commitment to American interests and strength in foreign policy.
