The Times of India Classroom comedy turns into tragedy: 16-year-old boy stabbed

On Monday in Janakpuri, New Delhi, a Class X student stabbed a Class XII student following an argument that escalated from a joke. According to police, classmates rescued the victim, who was then transported to the hospital in serious condition by the teacher-in-charge. The incident is under investigation.

The Times of India Eyeing your share: Buyback will now be taxed as dividend income

Shareholders are already paying tax at slab rates on dividend received by them. The Budget proposals have gone a step ahead. Consideration received on buyback of shares will now be treated as dividend income in the hands of the shareholders. As a result, buyback will lose its sheen for investors soon. As the new scheme of taxation of buyback will apply only from Oct 1, companies may initiate buyback schemes at the earliest, to complete the process by Sept 30.

Individuals miffed at tax collection at source (TCS) proposals have now been offered a small relief - provided they have salary income. At present, a salaried employee may declare income, such as bank interest and rent, to their employer, who factors this and, accordingly, deducts a higher tax against the monthly salary. The employee then does not have to worry about paying advance tax as adequate tax has already been withheld.

The Times of India Budget 2024: Out with old, new makes news

In another indication that the old tax regime will be eased out, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has tried to make the new tax regime more attractive for taxpayers. She has increased the standard deduction for salaried class by Rs 25,000 from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 while keeping it at the same level of Rs 50,000 for the old regime. This means that tax liability across slabs will reduce by Rs 7,500 which, with 4% education cess, will become Rs 7,800.
