The Economic Survey on Monday emphasised on the pressing need for comprehensive reforms in India's agricultural sector and recommended five policy points to ensure that the markets function in the interest of the farmer. It also pitched for striking a delicate balance between incentivising farmers to increase production and keeping food prices within acceptable limits, and suggested addressing the issue of land fragmentation.

On the first day of the Budget session, the Upper House opened with opposition demanding suspension of business to discuss UP govt's order asking eateries along the along kanwar yatra route to display names of their owners and employees. Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday rejected notices from opposition MPs on grounds that the notices were neither in conformity to requirements of rule 267 nor to directions given by the Chair and so the same are not accepted.

The Times of India HC to Swamy, Gandhis: File notes on submissions in Herald case

The Delhi high court on Monday asked BJP MP Subramanian Swamy and Congress' Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to file short notes on submissions in the National Herald case. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna gave them four weeks to file the notes but said if they were filed later, they would be accepted only with costs of Rs 15,000. The HC then listed the matter for Oct 29.

While civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu from TDP has been allotted 22, Akbar Road, heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy from JD(S) has been allotted 6, Kushak Road, sources said.

The Times of India U'khand to split its aid for deceased soldiers between wife & parents

The Uttarakhand govt is planning to divide the compensation amount offered by the state to the family of fallen soldiers between the wife and parents. Currently, the state govt adheres to the "next of kin" rule of the armed forces, which stipulates that the compensation is given entirely to the spouse if the fallen soldier was married. If unmarried, the compensation is given to his parents or other dependents.
