Sitharaman referenced Anna’s death without naming Ernst & Young, where she had been employed. "A woman who had studied CA well was unable to cope with the pressure... what should families teach? You should have the inner strength to handle that pressure, and this can only be achieved through divinity," she stated, emphasizing the need for spiritual guidance.

These remarks were met with backlash on social media and from political figures. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the Finance Minister for "victim shaming," asserting that it was the toxic work culture and long hours at Ernst & Young that ultimately led to Anna's demise. CPI MP P. Sandosh Kumar echoed these sentiments, arguing that the minister's comments belittled the struggles of working individuals in India.

Anna's mother, Anita Augustine, had previously raised concerns about the exploitative work culture at Ernst & Young, highlighting that her daughter often returned home exhausted and overwhelmed by demands. Following Anna's death, Ernst & Young expressed its sorrow and stated it was taking the family's concerns seriously, with chairman Rajiv Memani pledging to prioritize employee well-being.

In response to the public outcry, the Union Labour Ministry has initiated an investigation into the allegations of an unsafe work environment. Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje confirmed that steps are being taken to ensure justice and address the issues raised.
