In a bid to boost tourism and support the recovery of Wayanad following devastating landslides earlier this year, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, visited Kerala's longest zipline at the Karapuzha dam site on Tuesday. His visit came a day before the Wayanad bypolls, which will decide the fate of his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.

In a viral video, Rahul Gandhi enthusiastically shared his experience, saying, “On Priyanka's campaign trail in Wayanad yesterday, I had the chance to connect with some truly inspiring locals. Despite the recent challenges, they're not giving up. They've built incredible attractions - the largest giant swing in South India, a drop tower, and a thrilling zipline to show visitors that Wayanad is as stunning and safe as ever. I even tried the zipline myself, and I loved every second of it."

Rahul emphasized the resilience of the local community, stressing that the landslides were a localized event and did not affect the region's overall appeal. He added, "There is no problem in Wayanad. Tourism must not be damaged." He also jokingly challenged Priyanka Gandhi to try the zipline herself, humorously suggesting she could join him while dressed in a saree.

Rahul further expressed his belief that Wayanad could become a major tourist destination, challenging Priyanka to help in turning it into one.

The landslides and flooding in Choormala and Meppadi in July 2024 had caused significant damage, claiming over 200 lives and displacing many families. As Wayanad works to rebuild, the bypolls mark an emotional moment for many, especially for those impacted by the tragedy. Survivors were seen visiting polling stations for the first time since the disaster, with a special free vehicle service arranged to help them reach the stations from temporary shelters.

In the bypolls, Priyanka Gandhi faces competition from BJP candidate Navya Haridas and LDF candidate Satyan Mokeri. The election is seen as crucial for Congress, as the region seeks to recover and return to normalcy after the natural calamities earlier this year.
