OpenAI has introduced a new feature that allows users in the US and Canada to interact with ChatGPT directly through WhatsApp. By calling the number 1800-242-8478, users can now access the AI chatbot through voice calls, with 15 minutes of free voice calling available per month. This new feature is compatible with flip phones and landlines, making it accessible to a wider audience. OpenAI is testing this functionality as part of an experimental phase, and the availability of voice calling, as well as the time limits, may change in the future. This feature allows users to easily engage with the advanced AI assistant directly from their messaging app.

In addition to the voice calling option, global users can send messages to the same number via WhatsApp to interact with ChatGPT. However, for users seeking a more robust experience, OpenAI recommends accessing ChatGPT directly through their accounts for a fuller experience, which includes enhanced features such as search capabilities, higher usage limits, and personalized interactions. This offers a more customized and enriched experience for regular users of the platform who need greater functionality.

This launch is part of OpenAI's broader initiative to expand the reach of ChatGPT, which already boasts over 300 million weekly active users, according to Bloomberg. The move to integrate ChatGPT with WhatsApp is aimed at reaching more users, especially those who may not have easy access to the internet or prefer using voice calling as their primary mode of communication. This is also part of OpenAI's 12 Days of Ship-mas livestream event, where they have unveiled additional tools and announced new premium features, such as the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription plan. This initiative is likely to further increase the chatbot's global accessibility and user engagement.
