On Sunday night, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose announced that he had convened an emergency meeting with a diverse group from Bengal society. The purpose of this meeting was to update them on the actions taken in response to the rape and murder case at Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital and to gather their feedback on the matter.
This development follows a letter from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who urged both West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose to take immediate and decisive measures. Singh’s letter, which he shared on the social media platform X, expressed profound concern over the delay in delivering justice for the victim and emphasized the need for urgent action.
In his statement on X, Governor Bose commended Singh’s prompt response and shared that he had organized the emergency meeting to review the steps taken so far and to solicit opinions from various societal representatives. Bose also indicated that he would be discussing the measures taken with Singh and voiced his solidarity with the broader civil society across India, which has shown significant concern over the tragic incident and perceived governmental inaction.
Earlier on Sunday, Singh had publicly condemned the delay in justice through a post on X, highlighting the severe impact of the incident and urging prompt action. Singh asserted that the safety and dignity of women are paramount and that those responsible for this brutal crime must face stringent punishment. He emphasized that only through such measures can faith in the justice system be restored and the safety of women be ensured.
The incident in question occurred on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at R.G. Kar Medical College. The tragedy led to widespread protests and strikes by the medical community across the nation. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus were vandalized by a mob, further intensifying the situation.
