In a controversial election, Sundar Singh Tanwar of the BJP was nominated to the 18th and final seat of the Delhi Municipal Corporation's Standing Committee, garnering 115 votes—exactly the number of BJP councillors present. This victory grants the BJP control of the Standing Committee, perceived as the real power within the municipal body, allowing them to appoint the Chair.

The election follows a boycott by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has a significant majority with 125 councillors. Had AAP participated, they likely would have secured control over the Standing Committee, responsible for critical financial decisions affecting the municipal operations. The Congress party, with nine councillors, abstained from voting altogether.

This political maneuvering unfolds against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the AAP and Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena. The AAP's ex-Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, denounced the election as "illegal," asserting that the Mayor alone has the authority to convene the House, a point echoed by party leader Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal expressed concerns over the election process, suggesting a "conspiracy" to undermine democratic norms.

Adding to the controversy, Mayor Oberoi labeled the election unconstitutional, prompting Saxena to demand a report on the electoral conduct by the Municipal Corporation Commissioner. This election has reignited the ongoing disputes between the AAP and the central authority, stemming from recent changes in the council's composition following the resignation of BJP's Kamaljeet Sehrawat, who transitioned to the Lok Sabha.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the BJP's new majority in the Standing Committee is expected to face legal scrutiny, further complicating the already contentious municipal governance in Delhi.
