On Thursday, Pope Francis made a historic visit to one of Italy’s largest prison complexes, Rebibbia prison on the outskirts of Rome, where he opened a special "Holy Door" as part of the 2025 Catholic Holy Year. The Vatican confirmed this marked the first time a pope had opened a Holy Door at a prison since the tradition began with Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Speaking to hundreds of inmates, guards, and staff, Pope Francis emphasized a message of hope, telling them, "Do not lose hope," particularly during challenging times when it might feel as though everything is over. The Holy Year, which will last until January 6, 2026, is centered around the theme of hope and is a time for peace, forgiveness, and pardon.

The opening of the Holy Door at Rebibbia is part of a broader tradition in Catholicism, where Holy Years feature the opening of special doors at the four papal basilicas in Rome, symbolizing the door to salvation. The Holy Doors are only open during Jubilee years, and Pope Francis’ visit marked a significant shift, bringing the tradition to an Italian prison. His visit underlined his long-standing focus on the incarcerated, a key part of his papacy, which has included numerous prison visits both in Rome and on his foreign trips. This gesture at Rebibbia is part of Pope Francis' broader effort to offer spiritual comfort and to highlight the importance of hope, even in difficult circumstances.
