- Ricky Ponting, IPL 2025, Punjab Kings, cricket coaching
In a surprising move, Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings, taking over from Trevor Bayliss, who oversaw the team for the past two seasons. Ponting, who previously spent seven years with Delhi Capitals, signed a four-year contract with Punjab, highlighting the franchise’s long-term vision to rebuild its squad.
Under Ponting's leadership, Delhi Capitals became a formidable team in the IPL, reaching the final in 2020 but falling short of the title. Punjab Kings, however, have struggled since the league's inception in 2008, with their only final appearance dating back to 2014. The team has consistently faced challenges, finishing outside the top five for the last seven seasons.
Despite having a strong roster, including players like Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and Liam Livingstone, Punjab Kings have not been able to convert talent into results. The franchise's co-owners are hopeful that Ponting's expertise will lead them to success in the upcoming seasons.
Ponting's coaching experience also includes a stint with Mumbai Indians, further enriching his credentials as he takes on this new challenge. As he begins to form his support staff, the cricketing world will be watching closely to see if he can turn the fortunes of this struggling franchise around.
