As 2024 draws to a close, plans are underway to kick off 2025 with a range of new changes and updates. Starting January 1, 2025, significant nationwide changes will take effect, impacting households, professionals, travelers, and finances. These updates cover various areas, including data charges, visa processes, and GST regulations.

Key Updates Effective January 1, 2025

GST Compliance Changes

Several important adjustments to GST compliance will be implemented:

  1. Mandatory MFA: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will be mandatory for all taxpayers to enhance security on GST portals.

    • Preparation Tips: Update mobile numbers for OTPs, train employees on the new process, enable MFA in advance, and ensure IT systems are compatible.
  2. E-Way Bill Restrictions: E-Way Bills (EWBs) can only be generated for base documents issued within the past 180 days.

    • Preparation Tips: Synchronize invoicing and logistics with the 180-day rule, automate reminders for EWB deadlines, and coordinate inventory with supply chain teams.

These measures aim to simplify processes and curb fraud.

Thailand e-Visa Expansion

Starting January 1, 2025, travelers from any country will be able to apply for a Thailand e-Visa through the official portal, www.thaievisa.go.th. Previously limited to select regions, this expanded e-Visa system will now allow applicants worldwide to complete the visa process entirely online. This move simplifies travel formalities, especially for Indian tourists, who frequently visit Thailand for vacations.

US Visa Updates for Indian Applicants

From January 1, 2025, the US Embassy in India will implement significant changes:

  • Flexible Rescheduling: Non-immigrant visa applicants can reschedule appointments once without incurring additional fees. Subsequent changes will require reapplication and fee payment.
  • H-1B Visa Reforms: Starting January 17, 2025, new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rules will modernize the H-1B visa process, providing more flexibility for employers and smoother transitions for Indian F-1 visa holders.

However, despite these changes, visa appointment wait times remain lengthy, with B1/B2 visa wait times averaging over 400 days.

ITC Hotels Demerger

The demerger of ITC Hotels, announced by the Kolkata-based conglomerate ITC, will come into effect on January 1, 2025, following the necessary regulatory approvals.

Telecommunications Rule Changes

Effective January 1, 2025, the Telecommunications (Right of Way) Rules, 2024, will govern the construction, use, and maintenance of underground communication facilities on public property. These regulations aim to help telecom providers like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and BSNL enhance their services, including determining locations for new mobile tower installations.

WhatsApp Support Discontinuation on Older Android Devices

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop functioning on certain Android phones running outdated operating systems. This includes models from Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG, and Motorola.

Affected models include:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Motorola: Moto G, Razr HD, Moto E 2014

WhatsApp users on these devices should back up important chats and data before the deadline. The app regularly updates its requirements to accommodate advanced features like Meta AI, which necessitate more robust technology.
