Manmohan Singh (1932-2024): Architect of India's Economic Reforms Passes Away

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi after his health deteriorated, and despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.
 
Singh served as India's 14th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and was a renowned economist who played a pivotal role in the country's economic liberalization in 1991. During his tenure, India implemented various welfare schemes, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
 
Born on September 26, 1932, in the Punjab province of undivided India, Singh had a distinguished academic career, earning degrees from the University of Cambridge and Oxford University. He joined the Government of India in 1971 and held various key positions, including Chief Economic Advisor and Finance Minister.
 
Singh's legacy is marked by his contributions to India's economic reforms and his commitment to social welfare. He was awarded India's second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan, in 1987, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award in 1995 ¹.
