Rescue of Indian Nationals: Forty-five Indian citizens who were illegally inducted into the Russian army and forced to fight in the Ukraine conflict have been rescued and discharged from military service, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The rescue operation was part of ongoing efforts to address the plight of Indian nationals who had been misled into joining the Russian military. The Ministry also reported that fifty more Indians remain in the conflict zone, and efforts to secure their release are actively underway.

Prime Minister Modi's Intervention: During his recent visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin assured Modi that Russia would discharge all Indian nationals who had been deceived and coerced into combat roles. This high-level intervention highlights the commitment of both nations to resolving the situation and ensuring the safety of Indian citizens caught in the conflict.

Human Trafficking Scheme: The individuals were lured to Russia by a human trafficking network operating between New Delhi and Tamil Nadu. The network used deceptive job offers and dubious educational opportunities to attract victims. Upon arrival in Russia, the victims had their passports confiscated and were trained for combat roles, ultimately finding themselves on the front lines of the Ukraine war. At least four Indians have reportedly been killed in the conflict.

Ongoing Efforts and Legal Actions: The Indian government is actively pursuing the return of the remaining Indian nationals trapped in the war zone. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has emphasized that the toughest legal actions will be taken against those involved in the trafficking operations. The Indian authorities are also addressing the issue with Russia to ensure the safe return of all affected individuals and to prevent further instances of such exploitation.
