Tension escalated in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, today, a day after communal clashes erupted during the Durga idol immersion ceremony, resulting in one fatality. The unrest began over a dispute regarding music played on loudspeakers during the procession, leading to stone-throwing and gunfire, injuring six individuals. One man, Ram Gopal Mishra, succumbed to gunshot wounds while receiving treatment at a local hospital.

In response to the violence, police conducted flag marches through affected areas as men armed with sticks and iron rods were reported roaming the streets. Authorities have detained approximately 30 individuals in connection with the disturbances that unfolded in the Maharajganj area of Mansoor village.

Officials, including Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash, have arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Senior police officer Vrinda Shukla assured that efforts are underway to restore order and drive away anti-social elements.

The family of the deceased initially refused to cremate his body, staging a protest until they received assurances from police and administration officials regarding action against those responsible for the violence. BJP MLA Sureshwar Singh confirmed that the family has now agreed to proceed with the last rites, having demanded accountability from the police.

A case has been registered against a man named Salman, identified as the source of gunfire during the incident. In a post on X, senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged the Chief Minister to take decisive action to restore peace and protect the community.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also addressed the situation, emphasizing the need for vigilance against attempts to disrupt harmony in the state.
