Delhi has recorded its coldest morning of the season today, with the temperature dropping to 4.9 degrees Celsius, significantly lower than the season's average by five notches, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The relative humidity was recorded at 64% at 8.30 am, and the temperature is expected to rise to around 23 degrees Celsius by afternoon.

As temperatures remain in single digits, homeless individuals in the national capital have sought refuge in night shelters where they are provided with essential services like beds, blankets, food, and first aid. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents to accommodate the homeless during this cold spell.

Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi has been classified as poor, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 209 at 7 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). While the readings are on the higher end of the 'moderate' range, only RK Puram recorded an AQI in the 'severe' category. The CPCB defines an AQI between 201-300 as 'poor' and between 301-400 as 'very poor.' The IMD has forecast colder nights, with the minimum temperature expected to dip to 6°C by December 12.

The chilly conditions extend beyond Delhi, as Jammu and Kashmir recorded sub-zero temperatures. At 8.30 am, Srinagar reported a temperature of -0.8°C. The region had a maximum of 10°C and a minimum of -2°C on Tuesday. Additionally, a cold wave has gripped Shimla and surrounding regions due to a fresh spell of snowfall, making daily routines difficult for residents.

These weather developments point to a significant cold wave affecting northern India, especially in urban and hill areas.
