Arrest Warrant Issued for Yoon Suk Yeol: A First in South Korean History

South Korean authorities arrived at impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol's residence to execute an arrest warrant, marking a historic moment as it would be the first time an incumbent president faces arrest. Yoon is under investigation for insurrection due to his short-lived martial law declaration on December 3, which sparked widespread protests and led to his impeachment on December 14 ¹.

The arrest warrant was approved after Yoon refused to appear for questioning. Approximately 3,000 police officers were deployed to the scene, and protesters gathered outside Yoon's residence, vowing to block the arrest. Some protesters chanted slogans in support of Yoon, while others called for the head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) to be arrested.

Yoon's lawyers claim the arrest warrant is illegal and invalid, arguing that the CIO lacks the authority to request a warrant. The Constitutional Court is currently reviewing Yoon's impeachment case, with a second hearing scheduled for later on Friday. If arrested, Yoon would face charges of insurrection, one of the few crimes for which a South Korean president does not have immunity ¹.
