Is One Cup of Tea Harmful to Your Health?

For many, a cup of tea is an essential part of the morning routine, offering comfort and warmth. But concerns about the caffeine in tea and its potential health risks have led some to wonder if even a single cup can be harmful. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), both tea and coffee contain caffeine, which can lead to dependency if consumed in excess. The recommended daily caffeine limit is 300 milligrams, which equates to about two cups of tea.

Drinking one cup of tea each day isn't harmful, but what you pair it with could be. Common tea-time snacks like biscuits and pakoras are often high in calories, which can contribute to weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and an increased risk of diabetes if consumed frequently. Therefore, the key is moderation and mindful consumption.

Additionally, certain times of day are better than others for enjoying tea. Ayurvedic expert Dr. Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya recommends avoiding tea first thing in the morning, as caffeine on an empty stomach can disrupt cortisol production. Drinking tea immediately before or after meals can interfere with digestion and iron absorption due to its acidic nature and tannins. Lastly, having tea late in the day, particularly after 4:00 pm, can affect sleep and overall health, as it may disrupt liver detoxification and digestion.
