One significant action from the previous government that even YS Jagan Mohan Reddy might agree needs correction is the closure of the Anna Canteens. Established in 2017, these canteens were designed to offer subsidized meals at just 5 rupees per meal to the poor and needy across Andhra Pradesh.
However, the scheme was halted in 2019 under Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration. Reopening these canteens has been a central promise in Chandrababu Naidu’s election manifesto, and he has moved swiftly to address this issue since taking office in June.

Chandrababu Naidu’s government has committed to resuming the Anna Canteens on a large scale, with the reopening scheduled to coincide with Independence Day. The initial phase will see nearly 100 canteens operational, serving three meals a day to the public. Naidu will inaugurate the first Anna Canteen in Gudivada district, and additional canteens will be opened across the state by MLAs and Ministers. While canteens will be available in most areas from August 16th, the process will be delayed in Uttarandhra due to upcoming MLC elections on August 30th.

Deputy Chief Minister and Janasena leader Pawan Kalyan will oversee the opening of the Anna Canteen in Kakinada district. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development ministry has finalized the locations for these canteens, which will be established in 33 municipalities and municipal corporations throughout Andhra Pradesh. Minister P Narayana has coordinated with officials to ensure that the canteens are ready to serve the public as promised.
