Veteran politician and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury has passed away at the age of 72 after a prolonged battle with illness. Yechury, who had been admitted to AIIMS Delhi for treatment of an acute respiratory tract infection, succumbed to his condition despite receiving intensive care. His health had been declining over the past few days, and despite the efforts of a team of multidisciplinary doctors, he could not recover and was declared dead.

Sitaram Yechury, who succeeded Prakash Karat as the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 2015, was a prominent figure in Indian politics. He played a crucial role in the coalition governance era, notably during the National Front government of V.P. Singh and the United Front government of 1996-97. Yechury was widely recognized for his exceptional communication and oratory skills, which he used to influence policy-making and advocate for reforms in the public interest.

Known for his significant contributions to Indian politics, Yechury also played a critical role in discussions with the government on the Indo-US nuclear deal. His legacy includes his efforts to pressure ruling parties and bring about unique reforms aimed at improving public welfare. Yechury is survived by his wife, Seema Chishti Yechury, and their two children, leaving behind a lasting impact on Indian political history.
