The TDP coalition government, which was formed three months ago, is currently facing a significant challenge with the ongoing privatization of the Vizag Steel Plant (VSP). The central government's push for privatization has led to strong opposition from workers' unions, who have intensified their agitation against the move. Despite their relay hunger strikes and protests, the central government remains steadfast in its privatization agenda.

In a recent development, the situation at VSP has worsened with the closure of the smeltering unit and a complete halt in coal supply, which has severely impacted production, reducing it by 70 percent. Additionally, permanent employees are being encouraged to opt for voluntary retirement, further fueling the workers' unrest. During a recent visit to VSP, TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao was confronted by workers demanding concrete action from the TDP government to halt the privatization process. Palla assured the workers that the Andhra Pradesh government is committed to protecting VSP and has attempted to instill confidence in them.

Despite these assurances, the central government has not agreed to any of the workers' suggestions, such as resuming coal supply or transferring factory administration to them. The TDP coalition government is now facing a critical test of its commitment to safeguarding VSP employees' rights. Union Labour Minister HD Kumaraswamy has expressed interest in the plant's privatization, complicating the situation further. Workers are now calling for the TDP government to exert pressure on the Centre to stop the privatization process. There are also concerns among employees that the TDP might be colluding with the BJP due to their alliance with the national party. How the TDP coalition government will handle this crisis and support the VSP workers remains to be seen.
