The Andhra Pradesh government has officially announced a new liquor policy that will take effect on October 1st, marking a significant shift in the state's approach to alcohol sales and pricing. Excise Minister Kollu Ravi held a media briefing to outline the key features of the forthcoming policy, aiming to address longstanding issues related to overpriced liquor and accessibility for the general public.

One of the main points raised by Minister Ravi was the problem of inflated liquor prices in 3-star and 4-star hotels, a situation that emerged during the tenure of the YCP government. To tackle this, he promised to facilitate discussions between the Tourism and Excise departments to develop a solution. The government plans to introduce a new brand of liquor designed to offer quality products at affordable prices, making it more accessible to the average consumer.

In a bid to modernize liquor sales, the government is also set to establish smart liquor stores in high-density population areas. This initiative aims to enhance customer experience and streamline operations. Additionally, regional committees will be established to monitor and prevent the formation of liquor syndicates, a challenge that was prevalent during the previous administration.

In a notable move to support local communities, the policy will allocate 10% of liquor outlet contracts to the Toddy workers community (Kallu geetha kaarmikulu), recognizing their contributions to the state's liquor industry.

Minister Ravi emphasized that the government has conducted a thorough analysis of liquor pricing strategies across six Indian states, revealing that Andhra Pradesh had the highest liquor prices in the country. The new administration is committed to reversing this trend and restoring prices to current market values, which had been significantly inflated by the previous government.

The final decisions regarding the new liquor policy will be made in a cabinet meeting scheduled for the 18th of this month, marking a crucial step in implementing these significant changes. As the state moves forward, the new policy aims to create a more balanced and equitable approach to liquor sales in Andhra Pradesh.
