The Union Cabinet has given the green light to the controversial 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, which aims to conduct simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across India. This decision follows the acceptance of a report by a panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The panel emphasized the need for synchronized polls, stating that doing so would streamline the electoral process and optimize resources.

Despite the backing from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and notable support from various political figures, the proposal has faced significant criticism from opposition parties. Concerns have been raised about constitutional amendments required to implement the initiative, as it would necessitate changes in at least six areas of the Constitution. Critics, including Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, have argued that the proposal is impractical and serves as a distraction from pressing national issues.

The 'One Nation, One Election' concept envisions that all levels of elections—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—will occur simultaneously, potentially transforming the electoral landscape in India. The panel argued that such a system could lead to more efficient governance, reduced costs, and a more stable economic environment.

However, the implementation will require significant political maneuvering, as the BJP currently lacks the two-thirds majority needed in Parliament to amend the Constitution. If successful, the proposal could reshape the electoral calendar in India, but it faces an uphill battle given the opposition's firm resistance.
